The LHC Breaks Yet Another Record
On Thursday, April 5th - scientists at the Large Hardon Collider at CERN broke yet another energy record by smashing atomic particles together faster and harder than ever before. Now revved up and ready to go after a winter break to save energy for the region, the LHC reached energies of two 4 TeV beams - colliding together to create 8 TeV of energy, a new world record. This a 15 percent increase from last year, and the extra energy will account for a tenfold increase in data.
“This is a great start to the 2012 run. It promises to be an amazing year for particle physics,” said Oliver Buchmueller, a member of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) team that is conducting one of the two main experiments at CERN. 2012 will be a big year for CERN, and especially the LHC, as it closes in the Higgs boson. If this particle exists, it will finally explain why ‘things’ have had mass since the universe began.
The proton-smashers’ big prize is the Higgs boson, the particle which - if it exists - explains why things have had mass since the birth of the universe 13.7 billion years ago. Perhaps more interesting would be if the Higgs does not exist, which would require a rewrite of textbooks and the Standard Model overall. The range at which the Higgs could be hiding is closing, and getting narrower with each collision that CERN analyzes.
It won’t be too much longer.

The Tile Artist is back. I only have just heard of him, but I’m already a fan and expecting new works. The first “attack” was on the Mopilher Square, Oporto, where for a sometime it was called “José Socrates Square”, and was also included some character reference: “Liar, Corrupt, Incompetent, Portugal Prime Minister 2005-2011).

The Tile Artist new intervention took place on the “June 7th 1759 Street”, Oeiras village center, which was renamed “Isaltino Morais Street (Corrupt, Criminal, Politician)”, referirng the legal process in which the individual was sentenced to a penalty of imprisonment (despite still being in freedom).

The iminent construction of the Belo Monte dam, situated in the de Pará State, Brasil, in the Amazon jungle, is generating great controversy. This discussion is not new, dating back to 1989, when the construction plan was proposed and prevented. A green light to this work means the flooding of about 1000000 acres of forest, the dislocation of about 40.000 indians and the destruction of several species habitats. The discussion of this affair has already made “victims”, with the resignation of the IBAMA President, who refused to emit the environmental permit.

Sadly, this is a fairly common occurrence.

This kind of makes me want to die.

Emotionally intense images of retired Philadelphia police captain Ray Lewis - who has joined the #OccupyWallStreet protests - being arrested by the NYPD.

Captain Lewis has been outspoken against the NYPD’s wrongful use of violence against peaceful protesters.

From what I have seen, Ray Lewis’ conduct defines honor, bravery, and dignity.

There is a media blackout on images of his participation in the protest, and on his arrest:

crosscrowdedrooms:

It’s proved impossible for me to get this shot of former Philadelphia Police Cpt. Ray Lewis being arrested, published anywhere.  I was adamantly rebuffed by the Philadelphia Inquirer, NYT, local NY papers, and Newsweek, before even looking at the photograph.  One of the only published photos of this paradoxical and intense event is located here at the NYC Observer:

http://www.observer.com/2011/11/former-philadelphia-police-captain-ray-lewis-arrested-ows/

Make this viral and they will come.

Ray Lewis gets 2 posts this morning, because this needs to be seen. I’m not even sure why, but this pair of photos made me cry hysterically.

oh my god. so much props to this man. this country has turned into utter fucking insanity.

Wow. Just wow.
